The Missed Call

I almost didn't answer the call.
It was one of those random unknown numbers that usually brought nothing but spam, loan reminders, or people asking for someone I had never heard of. My phone had been ringing for almost twenty seconds before I finally sighed and picked it up.
"Hello?"Good afternoon. Am I speaking to Virginia?""Yes, this is she."
"I'm calling regarding the job application you submitted a few weeks ago. We'd like to invite you for an interview tomorrow morning."
For a moment, I couldn't speak. My heart was racing. I had applied to so many jobs over the past few months that I had stopped expecting anyone to call. Every day had become the same routine—checking my email, refreshing job sites, and trying to stay hopeful while watching rejection after rejection pile up.
I thanked the caller, wrote down the details, and ended the call.
Then I sat there in complete silence. What if I had ignored it?
I looked at my phone and realized I had almost done exactly that. The screen had flashed "Unknown Number," and I had nearly let it ring until it stopped.
That evening, I prepared everything carefully. I ironed my only formal outfit, polished my shoes, printed extra copies of my CV, and rehearsed answers to common interview questions. Even though I was nervous, I felt something I hadn't felt in a long time—hope.
The next morning, I arrived thirty minutes early. My hands were shaking as I waited to be called in, but I reminded myself that I had worked hard for this opportunity.
The interview was surprisingly relaxed. The panel smiled, listened carefully, and asked thoughtful questions. Instead of trying to trick me, they genuinely wanted to know who I was and what I could bring to the role. By the end, I walked out feeling proud of myself, regardless of the outcome.
Three days later, my phone rang again.
This time, I answered before the first ring had even finished.
"Congratulations," the familiar voice said. "We're pleased to offer you the position."
I couldn't hold back my tears.
