I always dreamt of starting up a matatu business. I decided to check on pros and cons of owning a matatu. What I heard really discouraged me. Though it was true, it is a truth that was and is really bitter to swallow.
I checked on a renown businessman from Nanyuki. He broke down the expenses of owning a matatu and they surpassed even the profits if at all there would be any.
First, there was the registration to a matatu SACCO. Secondly, there is the fee payment of the council (daily stage fees). You will have to employ a driver and a conductor. Both their families will be relying on the matatu. There are the touts, their families too will fed from the matatu. From Nanyuki to Nairobi there are over five police checks and in each check point, the driver has to cough 'kitu kidogo' for him to drive without inconveniences. The families of the cops will also be feeding from the matatu. Their side chicks are part of the plan.
From my calculations, I saw over one hundred people will have taken from my matatu even before a coin reached my hands. I quit the thought and buried it in the middle of the Pacific. Do you dream of owning a matatu?
