Beans, Meat, and the Price of Betrayal

For months, my wife and I had been surviving on hope more than food. Every coin that came into the house had already been spent before it arrived. Yet despite our shared struggles, my wife carried a silent suspicion that gnawed at her heart. She believed I had another woman somewhere—a secret girlfriend who consumed the little money our family should have been living on.

No amount of explanation seemed to convince her otherwise.

One gloomy morning, I reported to my cyber café as usual. I had left home with nothing—not even a spoonful of sugar in the house. I silently prayed for customers to flood in.

None came.

By noon, my stomach had declared war on me. By three o'clock, not a single customer had crossed my doorstep. My pocket remained as empty as the shop itself.

Out of desperation, I called my brother-in-law.

"Come and keep me company," I pleaded. "And if possible, rescue your starving brother with a little loan."

He laughed before answering.

"I'll come, but don't expect miracles. My pockets are on strike too."

A few minutes later he arrived, and we drowned our hunger in stories and laughter.

Then the unexpected happened.

A breathtakingly beautiful lady walked into the cyber.

Thinking she was a customer, my brother-in-law quickly offered her a chair.

She smiled politely.

"I haven't come for printing or photocopying," she said while looking straight into my eyes. "I've come for you."

I nearly swallowed my tongue.

She praised my looks, called me charming, confessed that she had admired me for some time, and boldly proposed that we begin a relationship.

As if that wasn't enough, she discreetly produced several crisp banknotes.

"I know life is hard," she whispered. "Take this...and let's get to know each other."

My hungry eyes almost betrayed me.

But my brother-in-law sat barely two metres away.

Summoning every ounce of fake righteousness available, I cleared my throat.

"I'm a married man," I declared loudly. "I love my wife so much that I can't ever even think of betraying her."

The lady looked disappointed.

Before leaving, she scribbled her phone number on a piece of paper and slipped it towards me.

Without hesitation—or so it appeared—I dramatically tore the paper into tiny pieces.

My brother-in-law nodded approvingly.

What he never knew was that my eyes had photographed every single digit before my hands destroyed the evidence.

Barely five minutes after she left, my phone rang.

It was my wife.

Oddly enough, she sounded happier than I had heard in months.

"My dear," she sang excitedly, "please come home early today. I've received my merry-go-round money! I'm cooking something special...and I have a surprise waiting for you."

Suddenly the world looked brighter.

As I walked home later that evening, another thought invaded my mind.

The beautiful lady.

I dialed the number from memory.

She didn't answer.

I called again.

This time she picked.

"Oh...it's you?" she said with surprise.

"Yes," I replied confidently. "I couldn't say much earlier because the man you found me with was my brother-in-law. I couldn't insult his sister in his presence."

She laughed.

Encouraged, I continued.

"The truth is...I've admired you too. My wife is...well...let's just say a man cannot survive on beans forever. Sometimes he longs for meat."

The lady giggled.

Within minutes we had arranged to meet the following afternoon.

Feeling unusually victorious, I ended the call and proudly headed home.

My wife welcomed me warmly at the door.

She smiled.

Too warmly.

There was something mysterious about her expression, but I dismissed it.

As soon as I stepped into the sitting room...

My heart stopped.

The beautiful stranger was comfortably seated on our sofa.

Smiling.

My wife folded her arms.

"So," she began calmly, "how are the beans?"

Before I could answer, the lady completed the sentence.

"...and when exactly were you planning to enjoy the meat?"

My knees instantly became unemployed.

The truth exploded before me.

The entire drama had been staged.

My wife had recruited the lady to test my faithfulness.

She had supplied every coin the woman had offered me.

Even worse...

She had been sitting beside her the entire time we spoke on the phone.

Every word.

Every insult.

Every foolish comparison between beans and meat.

She had heard it all.

What followed deserves no detailed description.

The two women transformed into a well-coordinated disciplinary committee.

One pushed me.

The other pulled me back.

One reminded me about the beans.

The other generously served me the meat I had requested—in the form of well-deserved slaps, kicks, and blows.

By the time they were finished, I had learned three unforgettable lessons.

First, hunger should never negotiate on behalf of the heart.

Second, memory is sometimes more dangerous than paper; I should never have memorized that number.

And finally...

When your wife suddenly becomes unusually happy after months of hardship, never assume fortune has smiled upon you.

Sometimes...

Judgment has simply prepared dinner.
