I never thought a simple lie would follow me for years.

Back in high school, my best friend spent weeks searching for a missing notebook filled with his poems. I helped him look everywhere, pretending to care just as much as he did.

The truth? I had borrowed it without asking because I was curious. One day, I accidentally left it near an open window, and the rain ruined every page. Panicking, I threw it away and stayed silent.

He was heartbroken. Those poems meant everything to him. Watching him blame bad luck while I carried the secret felt worse than any punishment.

Years later, we met at a reunion. He laughed and said, “I still wonder what happened to that notebook.”

For the first time, I told him the truth.

There was a long silence. Then he smiled and said, “I knew it was you.”

Turns out, he had figured it out years ago but was waiting for me to be honest.

The confession I feared for years lasted less than a minute, but the relief stayed forever.
